Vision: To offer athletic opportunities to all blind and visually impaired athletes in Washington, Oregon, Idaho & Montana.

Mission: The Mission of the Northwest Association for Blind Athletes (NWABA) is to encourage blind and visually impaired athletes to participate in sporting programs. This will be accomplished by giving out scholarships to our members, and organizing regional sports teams. NWABA will support athletes of all ages without regard to race or religion.

Values:

  1. Development of sports programs for all blind and visually impaired individuals in the Northwest.

  2. Use resources to best serve our members.

  3. Development of partnerships with other organizations.

  4. Communication with our national organization - United States Association of Blind Athletes

  5. Challenge our athletes to follow their athletic dreams.

History:

NWABA was re-incorporated on May 5th, 2007 for the purpose of helping blind and visually impaired athletes in Washington, Oregon, Idaho & Montana. The idea of re-starting NWABA came when a group of Visually Impaired athletes and some supporters decided that there needed to be more sports opportunities for the blind in their area.

The sport NWABA started with was Powerlifting. The team began with only two or three interested lifters, and by the time they started training it had grown to five. Under the direction of Billy Henry, the team went to its first competition on June 9th, 2007. By the end of the meet, NWABA had set several new up records and had accumulated many new trophies. This was only the start of their success. Over a four month period, the team attended 4 meets, placing at least third as a team in each, as well as taking home numerous records and awards from the World Association for Benchers and Dead lifters (WABDL).

Powerlifting is only one of the sporting programs that NWABA intends to support. As we continue to serve athletes and fulfill our mission, we will develop new programs and continue to improve upon current programs.

Goals:

  • Provide athletic opportunities for all blind and visually impaired individuals in the Northwestern States.

  • Organize regional sports teams that will teach blind athletes about those sports they wish to participate in.

  • Be a resource center for Physical Education teachers to get information on how to teach and adapt sports for there blind or Visually Impaired students in the public school system.

  • Raise $25,000 a year to help provide athletic opportunities for athletes this includes scholarships, teaching expenses and equipment.
